Anáil na hOíche Shiúileamar amach Gealach lán in ard na spéire Bhí m’anáil teann i lár mo chléibhe Aréir a chaith mé i ngéibheann Lán gealaí Oíche go maidin Is do dhreach amach romham mar phaidir Shiúileamar amach Bhí na deora á sníomh sna néalta Fiabhras fola i gcroíthe na réalta Mo chreach! níor fhéad mé éalú Lán gealaí Oíche go maidin Níor chuala mo stór ceol m’anama ____________ Night Breathing Out we walked Full moon soaring in the sky My breath tight in my chest I spent last night in captivity Full moon Night til morning You face me like a prayer Out we walked Tears being woven in the clouds Blood fever in the heart of the stars Alas! I couldn’t escape Full moon Night til morning My love didn’t hear my soul’s song

Dublin City Fever Dream Trudging up Grafton Street I’ve got the lead bound to my feet Dublin city’s caving in Caving in on me I hear a whistle float down on the wind Cuts through the fog in my mind It’s a cold soul in a sleeping bag Playing Down By The Glenside They killed God! D’you have a lighter? I’m beginning to fear that the screams of the night might Carry on into the morning Give us a tune! It’s an all nighter! Anxiety’s freezing my chest, won’t be leaving my lungs Til the day is dawning Glory Oh, Glory Oh x4 They say you can’t love somebody else Until you properly love yourself I hope it’s not true cos I think I love her I think I really love her I do And the tunes tear through the sky Over the suits that are passing us by He plays Dark is the colour of my true love’s hair And I’m feeling high as a kite They killed God! D’you have a lighter? I’m beginning to fear that the screams of the night might Carry on into the morning Give us a tune! It’s an all nighter! Anxiety’s freezing my chest won’t be leaving my lungs Til the day is dawning Glory Oh, Glory Oh x4 Don’t let the bastards get you down, he says, As much to me as to himself He says he once told Kavanagh up by the canal It was no wonder he was left on the shelf One more tune before we say our goodbyes He says he’s soon heading into the Joy Cos he got caught squatting in an old hotel When he didn’t have a bed for the night They killed God! D’you have a lighter? I’m beginning to fear that the screams of the night might Carry on into the morning Give us a tune! It’s an all nighter! Anxiety’s freezing my chest won’t be leaving my lungs Til the day is dawning Glory Oh, Glory Oh x4

Ringing That Bell Still they keep on ringing that bell Through the blacked out windows of my bedsit hell From the steeple top they’re taunting me With all their smug impunity It rings out without guilt or shame And no regard for my pounding brain Truths were told and numbers fell Still they keep on ringing that bell Through the blacked out windows of my bedsit hell Still they keep on ringing that bell How I wish Justine was here I would whisper I’m sorry in her ear When she left me years ago she said I can’t share you with the ghosts in your head Oh sweet Justine my Brixton queen She never knew what they did to me Some stories hurt too much to tell And there are fires that only drink can quell Through the blacked out windows of my bedsit hell Still they keep on ringing that bell Still they keep on ringing that bell As I’m counting up the coins for a bottle of Glens In last night’s clothes I’ll make a start And I’ll drink a curse to the sacred heart And all sanctimonious cunts out there From Letterfrack to St Peter’s Square No more holy than Cromwell Still they keep on ringing that bell Through the blacked out windows of my bedsit hell Still they keep on ringing that bell Oh sweet Justine my Brixton queen She never knew what they did to me Some stories hurt too much too tell And there are fires that only drink can quell Through the blacked out windows of my bedsit hell Still they keep on ringing that bell

Embrace The New Day The raw pink sun is rising The night has slipped away The blood red sun is rising Embrace the new day Embrace the new day The harsh yellow sun is in the sky In my eyes, it stops my quiet cry The day’s not here to die Where did you go? Down by the river oh Watching it flow Wondering how far to go Last night I lay in my own grave Its walls rose up around me I waited lifeless for the clay To drag me down beneath To drag me down beneath I watched the constellations scorch the night Like the scars that etched my mind When the world ends breathe a sigh Where did you go? Down by the river oh Watching it flow Wondering how far I’d float The soft touch of a hand upon your face The whisper of a song I know it’s hard to greet the day When the nights go on so long When the nights go on so long And when shattered candles line your path Like old corpses of hopes gone by Still the day’s not here to die Love come into my arms I cannot save you from harm The darkest nights are far from gone Hold on, hold on, hold on

Tá Cat i mBaile Uí Rúain Tá cat beag i mBaile Uí Rúain ‘s níl stop uirthi ag cantaireacht Ag feadaíl is ag crónán ó mhaidin go tráthnóna ‘S dá gloisfeá anois í ag góilín gan trácht ar bith ar phortaireacht Nach gcoinneofá ar do ghóil as seo go dtí Dé Domhnaigh Nuair a thagann tús an Earraigh amach a théann sí ag spaisteoireacht Ag damhsa ins ann ngarraí ‘s a luí faoi gha na gréine Bíonn caisearbhán ‘na malaí ‘gus nóinín ina lapa beag ‘S drioball thuas in airde ag síneadh i dtreo na spéire Is amach ansin sa bhFómhar a chloisfeá a guth sa teach arís Ag casadh amach na n-amhrán le miabhannaí chomh ceolmhar ‘S nuair a airíonn sí an fuacht mór isteach de léim sa leaba léi Is éadann Mhuireann fúithi mar philliúr is í ag crónán There’s a cat in Ballyroan There’s a cat in Ballyroan that never stops singing Whistling and purring from morning until evening And if you heard her songs, not to mention her lilting Wouldn’t you leave her on your lap from now until Sunday And when the Spring begins she goes out exploring Dancing in the garden and lying beneath the sun With a dandelion in her eyebrows and a daisy in her little paw And her tail in the air stretching towards the sky And when the Autumn arrives you’ll hear her voice in the house again Singing out the songs with such musical miaows And when she feels the bitter cold in she jumps to bed With Muireann’s face beneath like a pillow as she purrs

Only The Earth Time is a place I wish I could leave Tomorrow’s cliff looming up at me Today treading water, lost at sea Yesterday’s ghosts snapping at my heels These moneyed men would rule the ashes They would take our home and melt it down Pick the gold from the wreck of nature’s palaces Ah but we have a love they cannot drown A cry in the hard rain falling A sick river A wheezing forest A choking lake and A staggering mountain The bleeding leaves With their open veins The screaming trees and The sobbing flowers The seething sea The crumbling reef The cliffs shed their tears Into the poisoned ocean And all gather round To hear the whales sing It’s the last whale song I want to be held I will love you in the fragments I’ll tie our love to the last island Before they privatise the sky Before they rob us of the dancing wind Before they sell us back the air we breathe Ah we’ll find our voice and they’ll hear us sing Ah we’ll find our voice and they’ll hear us roar We only want the earth We only want the love We only want the earth We only want the love We only want the earth

The Deepest Breath Cold the hand that once held yours Furrowed face now forever empty She was old before she’d lived her youth Hollowed out in a land of plenty Did you dream last night, child? Did your dream stay with you? Oh, the city sucks the wild from your mind So hold your dream before it hits you And wear your dreams, they’re all that fit you We dig these graves every day Eternal homes denied in lifetime And the rich men wave our lives away Can’t see a soul without a price tag Did you dream last night, child? Did your dream stay with you? Oh, this town can burn the bright of your mind So hold your dream before it hits you And wear your dreams, they’re all that fit you Oh sing, friend, if you’ve a song to sing For your songs are a glimpse of a flickering freedom And we’re not yet spent and we’ve a world to win Ah, there’ll be no king but it’ll be our kingdom Did you dream last night, child? Did your dream stay with you? Oh, this land can leech the light from your life So hold your dream before it hits you And wear your dreams, they’re all that fit you And will you sing on now, love? You’ve got songs a plenty Oh, they’ll try to tear the truth from your mouth So sing on strong, make sure they’ve felt it Oh sing on now, for your soul’s not empty Sing on, sing on, In your song flies the highest hope of all Dream on, dream on, Our dreams are the deepest breath we draw
